Professor Piet Haers?
« on: June 03, 2014, 11:30:30 AM »
Does anybody have any information on this surgeon, is he any reputable? I know there wasa  previous post on him saysing he was taught by Sailer and picture was shown of a patient's before and after.

The reason i ask is because the orthodontist i am currently seeing has had patients in the past and are referred to him.

I still don't know why people rate Johnson and Thuau so highly when there is not any pictures or much info on them (apart from a photo of a geno from a few years ago) Saying that Johnson and
Thuau would be the two i'd go with mainly by being influenced from this site.
I saw Thuau and he is a nice guy even though he was wearing slippers when i saw him!

Do people put Piet Haer in the same bracket as Johnson and Thuau? He works at the same hospital as Johnson in Guildford Surrey.

Any info would be good

Good surgeon, does beautiful cleft palate work on babies, nice chap. He has a tendency to promise the earth but doesn't necessarily deliver, so bear that in mind if you consult with him. He's Belgium so favours the ante face more than the UK trained surgeons.

I was strongly steered away from him by a couple of professionals due to the nature of the extensive mess Mommaerts left me in, they felt there would be a danger that he would give me unrealistic expectations if I consulted with him.

Make of that what you will.

both my jaws are recessed with an underbite i do want forward growth.  I just wish they could actually give you an indication on what you would look like after surgery or a drawing of the face  etc

Well there's the rub, even if they do a morph there's  no guarantee that it will accurately be able to predict actual results, moving pixels around is a damn site easier than manipulating skin and bones. Plus, what might look ideal in profile for example, might look bloody horrific in 3/4 view.

I went for a consultation with Haers and of all the surgeons I contacted I was most impressed by him. I didn't have any surgery with him. I sent him my CT scans and his evaluation of my case was very informative. He gave me a very complete account of the underlying skeletal problems I had. I felt he was very easy to talk with. Although I did not like the surgery proposal he gave me therefore I won't be going for surgery with him. I saw a few of his before and afters at the consultation, nothing impressive to the point of making plain people attractive. He advised me to go with a simple day case procedure and did not push any treatments on me. Although he worked with Sailer he did not recommend an ante-face for me, he was against it if anything.
I would recommend a consultation with him if anything for the thorough evaluation he would give (particularly if you have CT scans for him to look at). I think my first consultation was ?180 and the second one was ?85, both one hour.

Thanks for the information Madeira that's good to know, what did he propose that was different from the other surgeons you saw? Have you made a decision on who you will be having surgery with?

i was just reading another thread of yours. I didn't know you had complications from previous surgery. Sorry to hear that. I just wanted to add, although you seem very pleased with your current Orthodontist, the one Piet Haers suggested to me was Dirk Bister, I have no first hand experience with him but just to let you know. Hope it works out for ya in any case  :)

Thanks for sharing, Madeira, always good to get first hand accounts of surgeons.

Can I ask who you are going to try next, given that Haers is out of the picture? Have you seen Paul Johnson? I'd be interested to hear your take on him.

I'm not so sure of my next move at all. In my case most surgeons dismiss custom implants almost immediately saying they are very expensive and would not be needed in my case. I will be patient and see what ideas I come up with. I've never contacted Johnson or Thuau but like you I have seen their names mentioned favourably several times.

I would love to see some before and afters from Johnson and Thuau for jaw surgery and not a genio, or speak to somebody who has had surgery with either you don't seem to find anybody, it's like some secret circle.

There's a Johnson jaw implant case on Look Your Best, he looked really really good.

Found the thread http://lookyourbestuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=49343&start=105

They're not allowed to show pictures of patients without their consent.

It's strange how there hasn't been any on the internet in the form of a blog. I know if i had surgery with Johnson or thuau and i was happy with the results I'd be showing them off, usually if you're not satisfied that's when they are not disclosed. Saying that my choices are still down to Johnson, haer and thuau there isn't really much other choice.
