Teeth sans bite splint
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:48:52 PM »
Hey all,

Just arrived at the 4 week post-op double jaw jaw surgery.  Was unwired completely today (bite splint out).  Of course my jaw muscle was sore, but that was expected.  What was not expected was that my teeth didn't line up very well.  The front teeth (everything up to the canines) are great, but my molars on both sides, while touching, do not "fit".  I brought my concern up to my oral surgeon as well as my orthodontist, and they both assured me that this is somewhat common and the post-op ortho will fix it.  I can't begin jaw stretching exercises until next week (in tight elastics right now), but I'm concerned that the weird alignment of my teeth will go so far as to impede future chewing ability. Still, I was hoping to see if any others experienced this kind of issue...

Any anectodal evidence as to whether molars didn't fit post unwiring/splint removal and were fixed subsequently with post-op orth would greatly ease my worries!

Thanks!
-Josh

Ah!  I should probably specify the type of surgery performed:

Mandibular Setback
Maxillar Advancement (Lefort I) w/ Sagittal Split
