SARPE surgery tomorrow
« on: September 16, 2014, 07:08:01 PM »
Today I had the torture device fitted  :P. was not quite as bad as I was expecting, except the amount of saliva I'm producing, which is similar to a four legged animal ::)

Anyway, surgery day tomorrow to have the expender activated and then it's expansion time, yay!

Anyone had this surgery?? Last minute tips would be appreciated!

Home from SARPE surgery!  A little sore and sorry, but surgeon said everything went great.

I am surprised how tight my nose and upper face feels, where as expander area and general mouth area is completely pain free. I turned it once today (day 2) thinking it would hurt, but no pain at all.

Swelling is pretty bad and sinus etc... Feels like I have been punched in the face, while I have a sinus infection  :o. Very low energy level.  I was told by day 4 things will be looking up.

On a good note, I had the best casserole  for dinner tonight, followed by raspberry jelly mmm

Been sent home with Endone, antibiotics, nose spray, neurofen.

Looking forward to scrambled eggs for breakfast tomorrow  :D

Yay, well done you!

The thought of expanding is much worse than the reality isn't it, I only experienced one painful turn but that was right near the end. How many mms are you aiming for?

You know about using ortho wax to create a 'fake tooth' when the gap appears? It's not perfect but it looks a look better than a whacking great black hole!

Good to hear it all went well!
01/10/14 - Last night I spilt spaghetti sauce on my chin for the very first time in my life and cried.

Oh great, where do you get the wax from??

I think my expansion is to be to 8mm -ish at this point.

Last night was a sleepless....felt nerves moving maybe?? Swelling has peaked. Feel tingling under my skin all the time.

Thanks everyone  ;)

Ask your ortho for wax or you can buy it cheaply on Amazon.

Mine was 8mm, looked like a real Hillbilly without that wax in let me tell you  :o

I don't know much about SARPE...did your upper jaw get slightly shorter from it (less gum/tooth show)?

And can the expander be activated by shortening the upper jaw? Or are they separate surgical techniques?

I'm glad it went well by the way and you're doing okay.

At the moment I'm so swollen I don't really know.

They have just separated the bone ...all about width of the upper arch and widening it.  Don't think it changes gum show etc....that will happen when I have double jaw surgery next year.

I hope DJS is not too much worse this feels pretty intense, I underestimated the procedure maybe??
Day 3 was always going to be rough and I'm just feeling a bit wounded, sorry if I sound like a downer!

Thanks for all your posts

Isn't SARPE supposed to be one of the toughest surgeries to endure?

also really glad to hear everything went well. what exactly do the initials SARPE stand for? is it something rapid palate expansion?

Natalie, did you have any difficulties with nasal breathing/restriction in your upper airway before you went for surgery? it's just that i have and i'm wondering if a surgery like this can improve breathing through the nose?
