Weight loss before a consultation?
« on: January 26, 2015, 10:00:56 AM »
I'm over weight but have been losing weight over the last few months. I've yet to go for another consultation due to other commitments/work but was hoping to get something arranged sooner rather than later. However, I'm now wondering - if this diet is working for me - should I wait to see how much weight I can lose before having an assessment?

Whenever I gained weight a few years back I put on a lot around my face. If I could lose this again would it be better in helping a surgeon to decide what might need to be done in the lower face area? My thinking is that excess weight must surely obscure the surgeon's overall view - not talking about xrays here - of how well/or not your face is proportioned. Don't a lot of surgeons get a pretty good idea of what needs to be done just from a face to face chat?

Losing weight really highlighted my mid face recession.

Yeah, my worry is that the fat on my face sort of pads everything out concealing the discrepancies in the bone structure underneath.

But heh, I'll know what to do if surgery doesn't work out...  eat tonnes of cake!!

I don't think that I'm too bad in the mid-face area - I do think there's a bit of deficiency, more on one side than the other, but not too much. (I'm really going to have to get pics up here soon!!) I think that in my case the deficiency is more confined to my maxilla. I also haven't much of a chin while having possibly some overgrowth of my lower jaw, if that makes sense.

Do you know if a loss of facial fat will make a recessive maxilla very much more noticeable?

Well maybe it's not a bad thing in a way. If I can keep losing weight it should hopefully help in giving a surgeon a clearer picture of what to do.
