Funding options UK, Private vs NHS?
« on: March 24, 2016, 05:23:51 AM »
Trying to workout what my funding options are if/when I get the surgery I'd like. Obviously a consultation will shed a huge amount of light on this but in the meantime I thought it'd be a good idea to canvas the site.

I've read that double jaw surgery done privately in the UK seems to hover around the £15k mark, is this right? And if so what funding options are available to people who don't have £15k under their mattress?

The above seems quite a way off for me so I'm also thinking of NHS options; can this be done even if you don't have serious life effecting disorders (like sleep apnoea)? And if so are the results worth forgoing a private op or would it be better to wait and save for private?

Thanks

I think it's unlikely to be funded by the NHS if your occlusion isn't severe. Even if you had something like sleep apnoea, unless it was refractory to CPAP etc. you wouldn't get surgery for it. Privately, you could try some of the western EU countries which could be cheaper if you can't raise £15k.

I'm having a double jaw surgery and a sliding genioplasty done by Paul Johnson in Surrey in 4 weeks privately, it's costing £15,500 all in with hospital fees etc. Without the genio it costs £12,495.
You can get it done on the NHS if it's for medical reasons, but the waiting list is usually pretty long just to get an initial consultation and the surgeon won't be thinking about aesthetics much, just about fixing any functional problems you have. It's best to save up and go private with a decent surgeon that's both a maxillofacial and aesthetic plastic surgeon as you'll get the best care and have more input into how you want your end result to be

Did you consult without anyone else Vic? Paul Johnson looks to be the best but wondering how others compare.

I thought the NHS might not be so concerned with aesthetics so I think I'll try to go the private route. Have you been offered any kind of payment plan with Paul Johnson?

Hi mate, Paul Johnson is by far the best and most experience in the UK, so If you want the surgery done properly with the outcome you want, then he's the person to go to. I've consulted with Dr Noorman Van Der Dussen, Professor Sailer, Dr Zarrinbal, but believe Paul will provide the outcome I want for my kind of surgery and is conveniently located for me to travel there and back with the follow up appointments. I'm just paying for mine up front, but I believe they offer some type of funding through a 3rd party company, but it might be best for you to get a loan from a bank if you want it done asap as it might be cheaper to pay back.

Check out his site: http://www.maxfacsurgeon.co.uk, I think consultation is around £150, so it's worth going down to see him in person.

What surgical movements do you plan on having?

Top info Vic!

I'm a bit worried about lack of detail before hand though, I've read a few posts about how the initial consultation is VERY brief and offers little information. Can you talk us through the process with Mr Johnson? For example when are you locked in financially with him? At what point do you get a surgical plan and how detailed is it? And what kind of idea can he give you of the expected results (I've read he doesn't offer simulations or anything like that)?

Cheers

I'm having the upper jaw CW rotated and also setback and then the lower jaw setback with sliding genioplasty to bring the chin forward and also making the chin a bit wider and might get a couple mm's in chin height added. I want that square chin look from the front

I wouldn't be worried, the first consultation is literally just a meet and greet, where he hears what you want and decides whether he can do it. Once you meet him, you'll feel less worried. I've had four consultations with him within the last 2 months, getting X-rays and molds of my teeth done by his technician and making sure that how I want it is exactly what he'll do. I had an exact 3D model built of my skull and jaws, which allows him to see exactly what needs doing and the movements and I used blue tack to show him how I want the chin to look from the front and profile.
I'm seeing him again before the operation to make sure that everything is how I want it and to go over the different movements as I'm constantly thinking about little tweaks I want doing.

Before you go to see him, it's best if you can send x-rays and photo's of yourself for him to analyse first. I already had x-rays done with traces, which analysed my x-rays against what was the norm with comments on from the technician.

He does his own traces on the x-rays through, to show you the final movements of the bones, which is how I like to see it. I think simulation's can be very deceiving and get people hopes up, but I done my own and took them to him to give him and idea of the final result.

He does the plan before you have to pay him. It's good because you don't have to pay be debit card no earlier than 7 days prior to the operation, so I've not paid him yet. But he's done all the planning already with his technicians

You are having your maxilla set back??

Yes, setback a few mm's. I asked him about any obstruction to my airways and he said I've got a lot of space back there from looking at my x-rays and 3D model, so it won't be an issue at all.
