More seriously, here's what I understood by quickly skimming over the article: a Lefort 1
might damage the "vomeronasal organ" (VNO). What is the VNO, you might ask?
In mammals, the vomeronasal organ (VNO), also known as Jacobson's organ, is a chemosensory organ, the function of which is still not precisely known. In some phylogenetically older animals, such as mice or rats, the VNO is most likely used in the detection of pheromones, [...]
And
The presence and role of the VNO in humans remains controversial. Some reports state that it completely regresses during fetal development, while others are emphatic regarding its presence in humans.
The authors make the bold assumption that the VNO does in fact exist in human adults, and furthermore that it has the function of detecting pheromones, and thus influences your mating behavior (i.e. humans subconsciously select their mates based on their "scent"). By connecting the dots, the authors propose that a Lefort 1 (or other types of orthognathic surgeries) might remove your ability to "filter out" potential mates that have a "bad" scent or to establish lasting bonds with those who have "good" pheromones.
To me this sounds very far-fetched. And it conveniently ignores the fact that your mating behavior can only be improved when you fix your jaw
