UK surgeons - not many options?
« on: August 22, 2016, 11:34:48 AM »
Hi guys,

Im based in England and am shopping around for jaw surgery, which is fairly limited in terms of the amount of surgeons who come recommended. Paul Johnson & Piet Haers sound like 2 options, but I've heard bad things about the former recently and I don't know much about the other.

I am absolutely unwilling to go to another country to get it done - too much hassle flying myself there combined with getting hotels sorted and having my family fly out as well - so it has to be here.

What other options are there besides them and Caroline Mills? (I have no idea how good she is either)

I need bimaxillary osteotomy by the way

It all depends on what you need to have done. What's wrong with you? Is it for functional or aesthetic reasons?

Aesthetic primarily, though my ability to speak clearly is also compromised because of the retrognathic jaws.

If your willing to pay the money, then you need to travel outside of the UK and seek the best. The Uk do not have anyone with that aesthetic skill set, its more functional there. Caroline Mills is ridiculously expensive and not that well known. It's worth travelling outside of the uk to get the best result you want instead of staying and paying all that money then being disappointed with the results after, and then having to spends months waiting to save money back and heal before you can go back into surgery to get the surgery revised. You need to think that this is your face your changing, so a bit of inconvenience in regards to travel and money shouldn't really come into it, seeking the best person for the job should. There's the best surgeons in Europe, which is a short distance flight, you don't need all your family, maybe just one member.
Have you got any pictures and a Ceph X-ray?

So who would you suggest in Europe?

Edit - I want to add - surely jaw surgery is a linear process? It's not like a rhinoplasty where there is some sort of artistry to it, you are just cutting the jaws in the same place as every other surgeon and moving them forward... so why can't UK surgeons be as good at that?

Do UK surgeons have incentives to be a good at this?

Ever thought abouts the cons of the NHS  ;) ?

Well I'd be getting it privately. I think £10,000 + would be an incentive. They must make a fortune off Maxfac work combined with plastic surgery proceedures.

My humble estimate is there are too few people in the UK who would be willing to pay privately for maxfac work. The market is too small. Most UK people I know expect health care to be free and fair for all people.

Any private doctor outside Greater London has a tough time to survive, so a niche job such as maxfax surgery won't feed him.

Better become a banker and get a bailout if you mess things up ;)

Get your treatment in Germany or Switzerland - many great maxfac specialist who love to treat medical tourists.

That's the issue right there, surgeons in the UK take jaw surgery as a linear process, use the standard cuts from decades ago, but it's the surgeons that take jaw surgery as artistry are the ones you want. The surgeons that look at all your features when doing the surgery to bring about the most aesthetic result possible.

Like Peter6789 said, the best surgeons close to you are in Germany or Switzerland, and I would for sure travel to them and not get it done in the uk

How does it work Orthodontics wise? If your ortho is in England but Zarrinbal is in Germany...

What was your experience Vic?

Once you've had a consultation with him, he'll communicate with your orthodontist

Paul Johnson is a very accomplished and skilled surgeon. I wouldn't let one or two negative rumours put you off as everyone has them.
It's more than one or two and the bad outcomes are really bad.

What if your orthodontist isnt willing to work with a foreign surgeon? I remember reading a thread here a while back mentioning something like this, about how it can be difficult to find an orthodontist to work with your surgeon of choice.

Find an orthodontist that will. Contract Daljit Gill. One of the best orthodontists in the UK. He's based in London and Watford

Well yeah but time is also a concern of mine, I don't want to spend ages waiting around for consultations (consults with orthos can take a LONG time, esp if they're popular) just to end up being refused for treatment, finding one quickly would be great. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll tie in a meeting with him when I fly out to London to see Joel Defrancq. I'm located in the north of the UK but travelling to London for ortho treatment wouldn't bother me, I just want to get the ball rolling with this stuff.
