I had a BSSO, 4 piece LeFort 1 and a sliding genioplasty a year ago. The surgery went terribly wrong and I ended up needing an anterior maxillectomy six weeks after my surgery. I'm still in the process of complex reconstruction. I wanted to share my blog in the hope that it can help other people who have experienced major complications. I also want people to be aware of just how serious the risks of jaw surgery are. I never thought something like this could happen to me.

that sucks but good luck getting through it. When I read stuff like this it seriously demotivates me to have the surgery. Hope I don't go through the same thing :(

I've read your story before, im so sorry you've been going through so much trouble!!!
Jawkid7, you need to understand that she had some factors that contributed to the aftermath of her surgery and the complications that occured. Im sure that if you arent having a complex surgery, things will be okay. Dont worry yourself to death!

f**k now I'm frightened to death as well!

Thank you! I'm definitely not trying to scare anyone out of surgery. I just want people to know that even though such serious complications are rare, they can still happen.

I've read this before as well, hopefully things are going better for you now!

i'm scarred too. especially that i used not to have any problem with my face before overlooked fracture. I know what surgery is and how it's risky expecially near eye
Chelie can you write something about how you picked a surgeon ? I mean did you ask another patients about his opinions . did you make a few consultations...
that would help us to learn how to make batter choice... to look for what during consultation....of course choosing the best one does not give a guarantee that surgery will go succsesfully, but we can reduce this risk

I read her blog about her problem. Some people use "teaching hospital" term there
is it the same as university hospital ?

Yes, I think so.
There does seem to be a greater risk of f**k ups in a Uni Hospital, best avoided if possible.

hmmm
So I have two options: at German uni hospital and Italian private clinic
However the one Italian wants 2 assistants... so how can I be sure that they won't do some parts of the surgery ? ;) Main surgeon's promise is enough ;) ?
in Poland there is one who performs only in private (well known) and has the largest number of botched surgeries ;) comparing to the public...and the best maxillo facial department in Poland is placed in university hospital near German clinic (close to border) ;)
Are you sure it's good indicator ?
what others think ?

Rico, you are hijacking this poor girl's thread. Make your own thread for questions like that.

I just want to clarify because there seems to be a lack of understanding regarding university hospitals. UPenn is considered one of the best hospitals in my area. I have a rare genetic condition that most doctors are not familiar with. University hospitals are typically the best place to go when you have a rare disorder. I see dozens of specialists for various reasons and most of them are at university hospitals because local doctors referred me to research hospitals. When I go to the local ER, they won't even admit me, they transport me to a larger university hospital where they're more equipped to handle my medical needs.
