Title: Scared about general anesthesia
Post by: Bowie on December 30, 2019, 12:01:50 PM
I'm having surgery in February which I am told will be 6 hours and I'm terrified that I won't wake up. Anyone else scared about this? I wonder how many die on the operating table.

Why worry about it? You wouldn't even know...
Pretty good way to go if you ask me.

That it would, but I don't want to go yet!

You'll go when the big man says so.

You’re probably more likely to die on the drive over

Is Sailor doing your surgery?
I'd be more scared of him than anesthesia or the big man.

I talked once to some Pharmacology professor. And he said, that general anesthesia  in young years ( so until 50 or something) is pretty safe. I am also afraid of general anesthesia (I am afraid to be dumb after that, haha). You just have really to outweight the risks. I think dying is the less concern. I mean literally, it is unlikely that you will die and if you die, then yeah, you are dead, your friends and relatives have the problems, not you.

More important ist to have a good surgeon, so that outcome will satisfie you and you won't have any functional problems. ( I am not implying that your surgeon is bad, but that are just the main concerns in this situation.)

Maybe just give to your anesthetist some piece of chocolate, so he won't fall asleep during the surgery, haha. Because it is a really boring job.

Thank you, Gadwins. Yes I have seen that the danger from anaesthesia is very low but there is still a danger from dying of your body's reaction to the shock of surgery. Still, I wouldn't havre thought that carving up your face carries the same risk as organ surgery.

If you are healthy and not obese, then you are safe. If you don't smoke and maybe not even drink alcohol, you are even more safe. If you do sports, then you will survive every surgery better then everybodyelse. If you still die, then maybe the old one (flying spaghetti monster or whatever there is) really wanted to take you to him/her.

Just think about that how many people not even fulfil one of this criteria and still survive all surgeries. Honestly I have no further information about it, but I bet that almost everybody who die during a surgery, just die because the surgeon made a mistake.
