I wonder if it's a good idea to already start training to sleep on my back prior to jaw surgery?

Might help you get used to it. I was strictly on my back for about 3 weeks after surgery and I still prefer it as on my side sometimes still leave me really sore in the morning. It's just hard to do......
So in conclusion. Sleep as damn comfortably as you can while you can.

I slept upright in a recliner for four nights after my surgery. On the fifth night I returned to my bed. I have not been focused on trying to sleep propped up or on my back. I am naturally a side sleeper and have just made sure I had good support with a pillow. I have not had any problems. Really, I thought it was more important for me to just get some good sleep.

I taught myself to sleep on my back a couple of years ago, partly in preparation for surgery and partly because it prevents wrinkles ;)
Try using one of those big V-shaped pillows.

Yeah it's quite a struggle so far. I found out that placing a pillow under my knees helps a bit.

Sleep on the floor. U have no choice but to sleep on your back
