Hey everyone,
Apologies if this seems like a silly question, but what do most consultations consists of? What is generally the process from now to jaw surgery?
Do I need to get cephs and 3d scans done prior to booking in with a surgeon, or do most surgeons provide complete analysis in this regard?
If I then want to see another surgeon, do I just bring the original scans to them to avoid more radiation?
Also, is it necessary to go to an orthodontist first?
The last consultation I had was in 2012 and I found the surgeon myself online and then he requested I have a number of scans/investigations done, which I paid for individually out of pocket (was a couple grand in total).
I have a list of surgeons who I would like to consult with now having done many years of research and am wondering what the first step is..

ugh call them and set up an appointment? at the appointment tell them about your concerns? then have them figure out what ortho work you need and get a referral?
repeat with a couple others so you know all your options.

If nothing changed since, you should be able to get a cdrom with those scans and take them to the surgeon. Some of them are quite computer savvy and you can share it with them via Google drive or Dropbox.
Good surgeons know good orthos but not necessarily the other way around because even the best orthos care about the bite only and either can't judge or don't care to what the surgeon does. And you can have a great bite with a very poor aesthetic outcome. So as far as the ortho is concerned - good bite - the surgery was a success. Heck 90% of surgeons have the same low expectations. I know, I've been through this.
