Title: Question about masseter hypertrophy
Post by: Sanj87 on August 23, 2021, 10:32:40 AM
Is it possible for really huge masseter muscles that attach to the zygoma to pull cheekbones downwards or to stop the cheekbone from growing properly when a person is still young and growing..?

I'm not positive, but a very well respected surgeon once told me, "In a battle between muscle and bone, muscle always wins."

It was in reference to the joints, but I don't see why it wouldn't apply to other dynamic systems such as someone who is still growing.

Seems like it could be an issue when the mouth hangs open at rest (i.e. mouth breathing) else the structures would presumably be supported by the reciprocal upwards action of the mandible by the masseters.
