Title: Before/after pics
Post by: breakkate on July 29, 2013, 03:29:37 PM
Got my braces off recently (only two and a half months after surgery) and thought I'd share my results! I had (in not very technical terms...) the top jaw moved up and forward, I had a cant which they corrected by moving one side up more than the other. I also had the bottom jaw moved forward 8mm. Hope that made sense- I never did get my head round the proper terms!

do you not have profile pics? that would give us a much better idea. you look pretty much the same to me in both pics.

Thanks! think it was 4mm on one side and 6mm on the other. My upper jaw was tilted apparently, I never noticed!

could you also tell us how you feel? is there more space for your tongue now? is your breathing better? what about sensation, can you feel everything on your lip chin? thanks!

I haven't got a profile one currently- I keep forgetting to ask someone to take one! But I feel much better about my face from the front- the 'before' photo doesn't show it but I used to not be able to close my mouth and now I can! That's a huge difference for everyone who knows me :)

I have most of the feeling back in my face, except for half of my bottom lip and a small area in my chin. It took about 4 weeks for most the feeling to come back!
I breathe through my nose now, I used to breathe exclusively through my mouth. Chewing is now so easy compared to before- I feel like I have a blender in my mouth!

breakkate how old were you when you had the surgery? did you have a genio as well?

Had surgery 3 months ago, just after my 20th birthday! The first picture was when I was 17, literally a week before my braces went on! Nope no genio for me, I sometimes wonder if I should have done but hey too late now!

yeah a genio is a totally separate thing. might even be better and less traumatic to do it separately. if you feel you want a stronger chin and more projection go for it.

Oh ok fair enough- I thought the result was pretty good myself, considering I could barely look in the mirror before!

Ok bad lighting but this is the only picture I have of me now! Think it's more obvious in this picture!

She has less of a gummy smile in the after picture.  In any case it looks like a good result, and from what she has said it sounds like she has much better functionality.

Kate, congrats on your surgery, you look great :)  Hair is fab too!

How was the recovery?  Where you wired?

Thanks :)
Recovery was fine actually, they didnt wire me and i didnt have to have a splint ether but I lost a lot of weight (stone and a half) really quickly which was worrying because they told me before surgery that I was a tiny bit underweight anyway! I'm pretty tall which makes my bmi look low when I don't look underweight. After surgery You could count my ribs, it was disgusting!
I had a bit of a "misbehaving heart" during surgery so I had to go back into hospital regularly for them to just check I was ok during recovery. But other than that I was relatively upbeat, despite the hugely swollen face. I looked like a lollypop.

who was your surgeon? are you British?

Did the usage of 'stone' give me away? Ha yes I'm British- had my surgery in King College Hospital in london. Mr Shaun Matthews was my surgeon, he's got a pretty decent rep!

lol yes

i thin you look great and your chin seems to be in-sync with the rest of your face. you dont even need a genio imo

regarding the lower lip numbness, were you told that the feeling to your lip would eventually come back?

Agreed

Did you consult with any other UK surgeons?  Did you get the surgery privately?

No I got my surgery on the NHS luckily and didn't have to wait for it either, which is normally the main concern with the NHS! They asked me when I wanted my surgery and booked it or the day I said! The whole thing ran without a hitch.
As far as surgeons are concerned, I got my braces through Guys Hospital and they have some sort of partnership with Kings College Hospital and they just put me with Mr Matthews. I may be wrong, bug i think on the NHS you don't really get much choice with surgeons. but when they planned the surgery they had a lot of consultants putting in their opinions so it's not just one bloke making the decisions!

I'm pretty easy going and I was more than happy that they knew what they were doing. I'm sure I could have kicked up a fuss if I wasn't happy with my surgeon but that's not really my style ha.

Kate, I think you were very lucky, to get surgery on the NHS rather than tons of ortho work that most people wind up with instead.  If you got your initial braces through a different hospital then it could have turned out very differently and not for the better.

Tell me about it - I was exceptionally lucky. I even got my own private room in the hospital and my own nurse. Couldn't have asked for more and I would have been happy with less!

I think because my self esteem was so so low, especially through my mid teens, that they thought surgery would be the only satisfactory solution for me. I would walk around and talk with my hand covering my mouth trying to hide it. Plus my front tooth is damaged because I fell off a bike when I was young, so it's yellow-ey compared to the others and they thought that I wouldnt be so self-conscious about it if i could close my mouth.
I know it seems silly, considering I don't look massively different, but I feel so much better in myself. My friends are all beautiful girls and I used to think I stood out as the 'ugly one' and I used to dread going to public places with them. I never used to wear lipstick because my front teeth rested on my lip - now I wear lipstick 24/7 and I love it. Plus (and this sounds so narcissistic so I apologise) I get so much more attention when I'm on a night out or when I walk down the street. That sounds so self-absorbed and i'm cringing that I have admitted that... but I do think I look better.

Did you see a big change in your profile?  Also, how far forward was your upper jaw advanced?
