Breathing post op
« on: April 21, 2014, 01:14:37 PM »
For anyonr whos had this surgery done, was it hard to breath after? Ill have my jaw wired shut for a week and thats one thing im scared about. I know when I had my septoplasty last summer, immediately upon waking up it was super hard to breath, but was very short lived. Im afraid I'll wake up and freak out from being wired shut and not being able to breath. I did read that the nasal spray they give you really helps clean up your nose.

I recommed you oximetazoline nasal spray for the first 24-48h and afterwards saline rinses as much as you want.
I don?t usually put my patients in IMF. Why are they?

Thank you very much. When you say IMF, are you talking about being wired shut? If so, my surgeon said hes going to be switching to using just bands in the future, but likes the results of wiring his patients shut for a week. Ill talk to him more about it when I see him next month.

I have not been wired shut, but breathing through my nose post-op has been easier. I had double jaw surgery so I assume it's because the upper jaw surgery opened up my airway.

I was not allowed to blow my nose until 10 days post-op. Had to use nasal sprays and clean out the nose with q-tips. I'm still not really blowing my nose because it hurts, but I am doing nasal irrigation (with the NeilMed sinus rinse bottle) multiple times a day now.

Thanks for the response. My maxilla will be impacted/advanced, so the advancement should open up my airway. Wont know till the 20th after my molds and xrays are taken if my lower need to be advanced too. Im assuming that the auto-rotation after the impaction should also  open my airway a little.
