Hernandez Alfaro in Spain does it but I don't know if he does it in every case. Normally you would get braces on before surgery even if your teeth are where they are supposed to be since the surgeon uses anchor points on the braces to fixate the jaws afterward.

Out of curiosity, why did one surgeon disagree with genioplasty?

I never hear of it in North America but I know they do jaw surgery before braces in some cases in Korea. Google the show "Let Me In Korea."

Not common, I'm in a position where I don't need braces for teeth movement but most surgeons won't do it without them.  Even if the surgeon doesn't wire you shut afterwords (which from what I've seen most don't), they use the braces for positioning during surgery.  They have to have something to grab on to while your jaw isn't anchored to anything.

AFAIK, they don't use braces per se, they use surgical hooks, which are installed a few days before surgery.
