What about the surgeons from Harvard, Jonhs Hopkins, U Penn?
« on: August 07, 2017, 08:45:53 PM »
I read on this forum about many big names in Europe and USA: Dr. Arnet, Dr. Gunson, Dr. Wolford (even though I found many bad internet reviews about the last one!!!).

However, I did not hear about the maxillo-facial surgeons from Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, and U. Penn hospital.

As a physician myself, I know those are one of the best hospitals in the world. And as a consequence, I was expecting to hear from this forum recommendations/experiences with the surgeons from those institutions.

Am I missing something?

I consulted with Gary Warburton from John Hopkins. He seemed quite competent but as an aesthetic patient (w/only mild OSA, like 1/4 of the USA), personally I wish he could give me his model block surgery. I took audio notes and even with that I couldn't quite follow the different cuts & amounts as he often pointed to his face without saying the different parts.  Now that I have a Relle model block plan, on the other hand, maybe I can see how reasonable that looks to him. Like Relle, he's definitely going for a more 'standard/natural' look than what Gunson showed me in his model block plan. He may be dirt cheap and is fairly local, but EU docs and surgery first and all... decisions.

the big name hospitals don't necessarily have anyone who does big name maxillofacial work. those are specialists in craniofacial and maxillofacial work are mostly from places like USC, UCLA, and the TEXAS area, that's where the best surgeons oparate and train. Honestly, the state of the art of maxillofacial surgery is terribly, terribly primitive so you're dealing more with craftsman than institutionally sanctioned professionals. I had some problems with my surgery with Sinn but there's a lot he did really well in terms of having no problems healing, and all my teeth are still there and stuff. With jaw surgery you're dealing with a ton of potential problems so its more about mitigating damage and getting somewhere in the realm of what you hoped for aesthetically.

how on earth would you know that they are the best hospitals in the world?

I'm well aware Americans think they have the best in the world of everything, but in practice most of the advancements in this field have come out of europe, asia and even south america.

Success has many fathers... but surgical orthodontics (ie. braces + surgery), CCW rotation were American innovations. America gets a bad rap for its outrageous healthcare costs, but I don't think anyone else has super research hospitals like you'll find in America.  The hospital district around Baylor in Dallas is huge.

Have you been in Mayo Clinic, Cleveland clinic, Jonhs Hopkins, Massachusetts general hospital?
Those hospitals are like small cities complex. And they spend millions of dollars in research every year. They are reference in several different areas of medicine (from HIV treatment to different surgeries). I said they are among the best in the world. But I believe that few hospitals in the world spend more in research than the ones above. Of course, there are excellent hospital in other countries too.

It is hard to believe, that despite being leaders in so many different areas of medicine (including facial transplant!!!), they do not exceed in maxillo-facial surgery.
Maybe because they don't have a website of before/after pictures like A&G...

I am not American; I am originally from South America. But I am doing medical residency in the USA. So, I have an idea of the research grants that those hospitals receive.

Only been to Dallas. That was impressive enough.

i've been to all those hospitals and paid 2 grand for a consultation at the Mayo clinic with the top max facs there. They're not close to as advanced as Arnett and Gunson. So sorry,  you don't know what the f**k you're talking about. For cancer yeah mayo clinic, not jaw surgery --and no not any of the mayo clinics. f**k read the old threads.

I read the old threads. And you need to be more polite.
I didn't say that necessarily Mayo clinic is the reference. I said that among this pool of big name hospitals they probably have excellent jaw surgeons.

Harvard.... that reminds me of Dr Reed Day from Phoenix who's a Harvard graduate but put my jaws into a serve crooked position... I will check more on the surgeon's cases and patients reviews, check yelp, orthodontics/jawsurgery forum, healthgrades.com , etc rather than his academic background and affiliation.
