Braces before deciding on surgeon?

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but I was wondering if it would be reasonable to get braces before deciding on a surgeon/plan? I am a few months out from being able to meet with A&G and Wolford so I was hoping to get a jump start on braces. My teeth are straight but need significant decomping as a result of prior orthodontics which flared my lower incisors and retracted my upper incisors. ANy input is appreciated.

I'm in the same situation,  and it's difficult to find an orthodontist that gives a f**k about facial balance.  A big part of the reason I want surgery is because of very poorly done orthodontics that affected my facial development.  Every orthodontist I go to doesn't think I need surgery because my bite is okay and my orthodontist did nothing wrong.  Every surgeon I consulted with agrees with my defomities and recommend double jaw surgery.  They all agree that my orthodontist f**ked up as well.

Well I'm lucky enough to be in NYC and have a plethora of options for orthodontists. I got a recommendation from A&G who they've worked with a lot previously so I'm going to consult with him and decide the best plan. Dreading the thought of wearing braces since it will be like a 1 year sexual death sentence, but I guess I have to look at the bigger picture...

This isn't necessarily true.  But regarding appearance, I'd think the beginning of braces up until about a month after surgery will be the most awkward phase.  After that, if surgery went as expected and your jaws are in aesthetic form, you'll be fine.  I'd take braces and post-op jaws over no braces with pre-op jaws.

Regarding your original question, I too suggest your first move is to pick a surgeon.  He or she will direct you to an appropriate ortho.
