Author Topic: What can cause a face to deform itself in early 20/s / late adolescence?  (Read 2793 times)

I have 2 pictures side by side in front of me. One is of me at around 7 years old. I have a square, defined jaw, a straight, non-prominent nose, a healthy glowing skin tone & a nice fullness under the eyes combined with no significant asymmetry.

The face 'fits' perfectly, it all melds together. there are traces of minor asymmetry around the chin, this is genetic and it can be accepted.

The other picture of me is at 23. My nose is totally deviated to one side, and one side of the face is further back than the other. The dark circles beneath the eyes are prominent. The chin & jawline blends together - they are both very rounded and short. The lips are pushed together in such a way that they look like a ducks beak.

The entire shape of the face, the sides of it, the bottom of it to the top, is radically different.

Surely this cannot be attributed to genetics, otherwise I would have had this face-shape since birth and would recognise myself in these pictures but I cannot.

Can someone please suggest what's happened?

Thank you.

There is no scientific consensus yet, but there is evidence that facial bones keep remodeling themselves at any age...
Science knows only what it knows best, and post puberty growth is still poorly investigated.
If appliances can change face in adults, bad habits can certainly do as well.
How old are you ? are you a mouth breather ?

Did you have any orthodontic work or teeth pulled? Were you a mouth breather? Furthermore, where do you normally rest your tongue (roof or mouth or bottom)? All these and more can greatly affect how your facial structure develops.

same here. Im looking old pictures side and front and now. im 20 now. I had good nose good chin and good jawline at 13. Now my neck and jawline connected. Probably i have forward head posture and worse smile. at 13 i had crooked teeths but had a good smile. Now my teeth straight but have a bad smile so much dark corridor. I had bad orthodontic work at17to 19 and mb genetics play role. Ur jawline genetics show themselves in puberty i think.

Im not alldaymouthbreather i didnt feel i mouth breathe before. My dad has small chin and jaw. But good jaw widht and jawline and prominent chin which camouflaged his recessed lower.

your friends and family cant notice this directly because they were with you while you changin. I just want to go back 2-3 year and dont go braces. At least i was thinking only my teeth made me ugly.(maybe this was true)

No pictures - -  but from your description:

???  You should try to rule out the possibility of :

Parry–Romberg syndrome (also known as progressive hemifacial atrophy) is a rare disease characterized by progressive shrinkage and degeneration of the tissues beneath the skin, usually on only one side of the face (hemifacial atrophy) but occasionally extending to other parts of the body.

It can be surgically addressed.   I learned of this when a neighbor's son had this many years ago.

that's the culprit right there, yes it CAN DESTROY THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE FACE (what several dentists have no quoted to me) and what actually happened to me as an ADULT I've seen the architecture of my face destroyed because of this. It will change how you breath too so your nose will deviate, your jaw will deform, soft tissue will change radically. that's the culprit as well as bad habits. no need to further inquire.

How about getting a CT scan of your head and then analyzing the DICOM pictures in a DICOM 2D/3D viewer?

That should help to measure and check the asymetry.

Measure your gonial angle, length of your mandible and the Wits value.

Maybe you have a short face with small lower jaw and some downward growth of your maxilla? That would explain your features.

Otherwise: many people look cute as children and somehow ugly when grown up. A child with smaller and recessed jaws can still get away as cute but a grown up person - no way.
