Has anyone tax deducted surgical expense?
« on: November 18, 2016, 01:17:11 PM »
The IRS says the following: "If you itemize your deductions for a taxable year on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), Itemized Deductions, you may be able to deduct expenses you paid that year for medical and dental care for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents. You may deduct only the amount of your total medical expenses that exceed 10% of your adjusted gross income or 7.5% if you or your spouse is 65 or older."

Has anyone actually taken or does anyone plan to take a tax deduction related to surgical costs?  I believe that transportation costs and a number of ancillary costs may also be deductible.

I wonder if a revision chin implant procedure could be considered medical, if it was done for medical as opposed to cosmetic reasons (ie extremely poorly placed implant causing complications).

If your reasoning isn't supported by a contributing medical condition which requires such a procedure, the IRS generally will not permit the deduction for the expense." You may not deduct medical expenses for cosmetic surgery; specifically, procedures undergone with the intention to merely enhance your appearance.

The IRS says: "You can include in medical expenses the amount you pay for cosmetic surgery if it is necessary to improve a deformity arising from, or directly related to, a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from an accident or trauma or a disfiguring disease."

That said, what if it had some functional benefits?

Hmm so retrogenia and retrognathia I don't think is a 'medical condition'... but it has caused sleep apnea, which is a medical condition.  A chin implant isn't required to treat this medical condition, but it does improve a congenitial deformity if we can consider the diagnosed retro jaw/chin a deformity.  Not sure.....
