OH GOD INFECTED PLATE!!!!!!
« on: November 29, 2016, 10:36:33 AM »
So yeah as you guys know I had a bit of bone sticking out near my lower left mandible out of the gum behind the molar. More like  a large flake of bone or something. People thought it was a bone spur, but the oral surgeon I saw today here in my hometown said the the plate there is infected and that I will need to have the plate removed. He also said I may possibly lose the molar there as well if it is dead or dies or too loose.

So this is all terrible news. I've emailed Dr. Sinn all about it and am waiting to hear his thoughts but the surgeon here has put me on an antiobiotic regimen (pennicilin) which I'm not thrilled about since I don't like taking that stuff but I must as I don't want the whole jaw to get infected or some crap. Strangely I'm in ZERO pain and don't even feel anything is wrong.

I"M VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE PLATE BEING TAKEN OUT ONLY FOUR MONTHS AFTER SURGERY> IS THAT ENOUGH TIME TO HEAL???? IS THAT ENOUGH TIME FOR RELAPSE TO NOT OCCUR? THE SURGEON HERE SEEMED TO THINK SO, BUT I"VE HEARD HARDWARE SHOULDN"T BE TAKEN OUT AT LEAST A YEAR POST-OP????

What do you guys think???? AND FOR ALL OF YOU CONSIDERING IMPLANTS HERE'S THE NEWS, EVEN THE TITANIUM PLATES CAN GET INFECTED!!!!

Hm....sorry to hear about this Lazlo. Pretty s**tty news, but I am certain it will be okay.

I wouldn't stress too much about relapse, but it is traditional that plates stay in for ~6 months. You will have to wait to hear back from Sinn before making a decision. Was this just a regular OMFAS?

yeah just a regular dude here in my town. though he did say he does bi-max's "all the time" and he was on the older side so he seemed experienced as well. what i was most concerned about as well is he said that i may lose one of the molars which sucks, but it seems that everyone is losing teeth these days and just gets implants so maybe that isn't a biggy. I don't know. I really don't know how or why this happened.

Part of me honestly doesn't thin there's any infection and that this is just a shattered piece of bone that can be taken out but the doc said it's too big to be just that. And well I've started the penicillin.

I am also certain that it will be okay. Try to not get one of your molars removed or the bone where the molar was will resorb a little bit due to the fact that he won`t have a function anymore.

GOOD LUCK LAZLO! ;)

Yes, remove the bastard plate. In that location, union should occur in 4-6 weeks actually so you're very fine. Have him remove any other hardware nearby while he's at it if you can. Union will actually be better afterwards since you'll eliminate stress shielding from the plate.

Sucks about the molar :( I hate implants but I hate being toothless even more. A friend of mine has a molar implant, she's happy with it.

Thanks all of you guys, and thanks Molestrip for the good news that the union should be fine. The doc said if there are no other complications its a simple surgery.

Yeah it's been almost four months so hopefully then the union is fine. I'm gonna tell him to do whatever he can to keep the molar in there.

I hear it can be done outpatient under with local anesthesia even. You might opt for twilight sedation.

4mo is the longest even a HA graft takes to heal.

Talked briefly with Dr. Sinn and he said he's in touch with the doctor here.

Dr. Sinn totally reassured me the tooth should not be pulled at all and it may just be the
screw is loose which sometimes happens and that it can be easily removed, the infection
cleaned out and should even close up on its own. My next meeting is with the surgeon
here next Tuesday so I won't know more till then, but I'm really glad Dr. Sinn
suggested against any tooth removal. Will keep you all updated as further developments.

Listen, I know I have a bunch more surgery ahead of me for other things so this is no big deal.

What's up y'all!!!

Had surgery this morning to remove a huge chunk of protruding bone and my left mandible osteotomy plate.

Went under general. My surgeon was Dr. Claudio Tocchio of Toronto. I gotta say the guy is fantastic. I woke up in what felt like minutes later. I had ZERO. NO PAIN WHATSOEVER. She asked me how much pain I had, and of course I said like 10!!! Just cause I really wanted the the no not morphine, even 100 times more powerful, the fentanyl drip and wow just flooded my body on cloud nine. Felt amazing. Explored the surgery site with my tongue. Beautiful clean stiches. Obviously still zero pain. Hung out in after care for like 30 minutes just enjoying the trip. No nausea, no pain, the whole jaw can open so so so much better now with the dang plate and bone fragment gone. Asked the doctor what he found there. Said there was a bit of an infection and loose plate he cleaned all out. Said the bone had totally healed and was nice and strong, no problem with relapse.

And I've been awake all day eating ice cream and watching netflix just cause I have the excuse to. I could literally run a marathon I feel so great. My jaw feels even better, and I can open wide as hell. Nice that this whole s**tshow got resolved well. I was actually more nervous about this op than i was about the original jaw surgery funny enough.
