Cheek implants with bone harvested from the skull
« on: April 08, 2017, 12:40:37 AM »
"This approach, called Malar Augmentation, most often relies on synthetic implants, but can also use bone harvested from the patient's skull to augment the existing bony structure on the face."

Calvarial bone is permanent, it fuses with the existing bone. There will be no bone erosion. In other words: It is the perfect material for augmentation.

I think the surgeon would harvest it through a hairline incision. It would maybe leave only a little scar. But how would it be replaced on the skull? And maybe it would not be easy to shape it into the desired form.

CONCLUSION:
From this present histomorphologic study, it might be concluded that grafted bone obtained from calvarial sources for sinus lift procedure presented a significantly higher degree of bone volume and vital bone volume in contrast to bone harvested from the iliac crest.

Does anyone have more information?
