Surgeon unable to form specific surgical plan?
« on: May 20, 2015, 06:57:34 AM »
A surgeon called me back today to discuss my situation and said that they often do not even know for sure whether they will be doing just a bsso or LF1 as well, since this cannot be told until "weeks before" the actual surgery itself. He said that due to the nature of orthodontics no specific plan can be made, all he can really do is educate me about the risks and goals of surgery.

This sounds completely out of line with what I have heard about how arnett and gunson provide very detailed surgical plans in their consults? Now I'm wishing I had taken the chance to go see them for a consult, at least

They do provide a plan at the consult but it's just a preliminary one. The surgeon is right that they can't be sure until they see what the decompensated bite looks like though in many cases it should be obvious whether you'll need single or double jaw surgery.

Oh, that makes sense.

Doesn't that mean that choosing your surgeon is that much more important?

You're truly choosing an artist as much as you're choosing a doctor.
