Is There A Non-Surgical Way to Fix This?
« on: December 28, 2015, 09:28:34 AM »
I have a very long midface. (Here's what I mean by midface: http://imgur.com/QMoDVGc.) The ideal ratio is when the interpupillary distance matches the eye-to-lip distance, but you are still within the range of attractiveness when the interpupillary distance does not exceed the distance between the outer irises. (Think Bella Hadid and Liv Tyler.)

When the vertical length exceeds that, however, you are generally considered unattractive even on a subconscious level. (Think Sarah Jessica Parker and Lily Tomlin.)

I usually fit within the outer iris-to-outer iris range, but in some photos (and in person, I think) I exceed that.

My question is this: is there a way WITHOUT SURGERY that I can do something about this? Shorten the midface? Is there an orthodontic procedure I can do? (Note: I also have a bit of a gummy smile.)

Here are some photos (note that I do NOT fit into the acceptably attractive range in the first one):

I'm just so tired of being and feeling hideous. I want to be able to stop hiding behind my glasses. Help, please.

What about intruding the top molars? I have been that for every 1mm you intrude the molars you can shorten the anterior facial height by 3mm. I am not sure if this would be a solution for your case but it's something to look into. If anyone else knows more about it feel free to chime in and correct me.

You could try face pulling look up the thread "home made maxillary protractor" or something along the lines of that.

Hi RedLips - First off, you're gorgeous. It doesn't look like your midface is too long to me.

If you want to do something not involving surgery, I agree with meepmeepmeep on intrusion. TADs, temporary anchorage devices, can be used to intrude teeth and improve gummy smiles.

Thank you! It feels great to know that there's something I can do about it.

The ideal ratio you mentioned is just one aspect of beauty. There are lots of types of beauty... otherwise the world would be a very boring place. Both the people you mentioned as examples of long midfaces are quite beautiful.

Okay, so I'm obsessing about my midface. I'm going to post here photos I took that are all from the same day.

This is the measurement I'm going by: http://imgur.com/QMoDVGc

If the distance between eyes and lips is longer than the distance from outer iris to outer iris, you are generally considered unattractive. I am so scared that that's what is wrong with my face.

Here is one picture taken from about arm's length. It's a selfie: http://imgur.com/SWfufvt
And here is proof that I don't fit the iris-to-iris measurement in that picture: http://imgur.com/iOpg28W

Here is the next picture where my face is kind of turned, and I miss the iris-to-iris measurement by a LONG shot: http://imgur.com/Mxw2XfG
Here's proof: http://imgur.com/DyYMM8U

In this one, I DO fit: http://imgur.com/ib3Cmn5
See? http://imgur.com/MXemEGJ

And I fit in this one too: http://imgur.com/HMRlmR7

So WHAT IS THE DEAL? Do I fit the measurement? Or don't I? Does this mean my face is automatically ugly? Is there a fix for this?

I'm Cuban, actually.

Are you sure it's not that bad? When I look at myself up close in the mirror, my midface (eyes to mouth distance) looks soooooo long. I know it has to do with angles and distance from the camera and all, but I feel so depressed about how long my face is.

You are a bit slow aren't you..

People have told you to take a pic from DISTANCE. NOT A SELFIE, multiple times, yet you just post close up lens distorted pictures and say 'muh long face'.

Get a camera

Put it on a shelf

stand a few feet away atleast

take pic

post it ITT

hahaha well said.

You called yourself "hideous" and said "you hide behind glasses"  "you are so scared thats whats wrong with your face".  Do you seriously mean those things?  You do realize that you are really good looking right?  Honestly and Im not saying this to make fun of you but I think you have Body Dysmorphic Disorder.  There is no way that anyone who looks as good as you should be obsessing over their looks especially to the point where its obviously affecting your life.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with your face.
The more I learn about the gamble that is jaw surgery the more afraid I become!!!   :-(

She doesn't have Body Morphic Disorder and there is actually not such a thing apart from psychiatrists making lots of money with people's insecurities.
She is just a young woman who is a bit more focused on her appearance than average and observes how beautiful girls are treated differently.

If there is anything like BDD, I have looked at some of those people and I could truly understand most of them . Many women these days compare themselves to models and feel hideous because they believe they can't keep up with the standard look. Then it's a few comments here and there from guys or jealous women and more sensitive souls are scarred for life.
If you aren't happy with your appearance, 1000 comments here from people telling you that you look fine won't satisfy you.
You know what can actually satisfy you to some extend?
Hiring a very professional photographer and make-up team and making them take great pictures of you. then posting them on Instagram and realizing that you are as great as all of these stupid Instagram girls (which is mainly good Photoshop, light, make-up and the best angles from great photography).
Becoming a model for your own blog can help tremendously with bad self esteem.
In my opinion you look very good and make-up and light could make all the difference

LOLOLOLOL  There is no such thing as Body Dysmorphic Disorder and a session with a photographer posting pictures on Instagram will help her???  WOW may I ask what your thesis was when you got your PhD in Psychology?   I've never seen "get a professional photographer and post pics to Instagram" as a viable treatment for anything in the DSM4.  Pretty much everything you said was absurd.  Posting airbrushed pictures, fishing for compliments, isn't going to do anything for low self esteem.
The point is she is already in the top tier when it comes to looks and unless she has some serious functional issue she (or anyone) shouldn't even be thinking about a surgery where they crack your face into pieces and put it back together with nuts and bolts.

I agree. Posting airbrushed pictures will actually make someone with BDD symptoms feel worse. If they got praise and likes on airbrushed pro makeup/hair/photo it would just prove to them just how ugly they REALLY are. It's probably the worst thing somone could do to make them feel better. They'll never be able to live up to those photos and will hide themselves even more society.

Isabella the fact that you even think that would help shows you don't understand what BDD is and if someone you know has been helped by your 'cure' then they obvs never had BDD to begin with (which is good). People with BDD don't compare themselves to celebrities and models; they compare themselves to their friends, family, classmates, neighbours, all the millions of normal people walking down the street. They just desperately want to be normal. Not even beautiful. They just want to blend in with everyone else.

But you know I'm talking about BDD where the concern is overall facial ugliness, like when everything is wrong. Some BDD just focus on a particular feature.

Finally someone agrees with me on a forum lol. I guess I am right sometimes wheeew
