So I've been using silicone gel for about six months now, and I'm wondering if it really does make a difference to scar formation/healing. When ever I ask a surgeon, they all confess it's not been around long enough, and no one really knows exactly how it works. So, the way I understand it, you need to keep a wound moist for the production of collagen, and covered to protect it from the environment. The silicone gel appears to have these both covered, it's hydrating and it also sets to form a protective barrier. The thing is, I'm not convinced it's any better than say applying petroleum jelly, which is a lot cheaper, and maybe a plaster. It's impossible to know, since my scar has faded over the six months I've been using it, but it's not amazing, and I'm sure it would have faded on it's own somewhat anyway. So if anyone has any more info/experience with it, then I'd love to hear it!
