What do you mean by pre-surgery status? I'm guessing Class I people would expect least dramatic change? And the younger the patient, the more siginificant the improvement, holding all else constant?

your physical status before surgery. the features your surgeon has no control over. underbites tend to have the most dramatic result based on what we have seen.

age - more youthful skin. not someone who is 35 vs someone who is 30, not a big difference. also before the bones are hard, 14/15/16 or younger.

bro this isnt me talking. i think arnett even wrote about pre-surgery status and superficial features (skin for example) being essential in determining aesthetics.

msmixmaster, results depend on:

expectations: where your expectations realistic?
surgeon's skill: is he good?
surgical planning & movements: is it a good plan for your face
functional problems: will you solve some functional issues?
luck: -
unpredictable omitted factors: z

women, bone healing, total bulls**t.

Regarding the patient's satisfaction level with the results of his/her jaw surgery, sounds like the only controllable factors are: choice of the surgeron; timing of the surgery; and one's own expectation management. Since the first two have already been set for me, the only thing under my control at this point is to manage my own expectations...

I'm thinking my gummy smile and midface dificiency may not be corrected...Is there any way to fix midface dificiency w/o moving upper jaw forward? Or any way to address gummy smile w/o much impaction? How much of asymmetry can one expect a jaw surgery to fix?

asymmetry is majorly adressed.

Midface deficiency is not, but who cares, being a male it's not a key feature.

Gummy smile should be solved, if not you could think about making a gum contouring laser work

:) ....but i'm a girl. That's OK, I didn't even know it was a problem until I began looking into this jaw surgery thing.

gummy smile should be solved. as far as asymmetry, it depends on what you consider asymmetry. if you mean left/right asymmetry, in the jaw area certainly.

Somewhat related...I read somewhere that coconut oil is really good for you, anti-inflammatory/ anti-viral/ anti-bacterial/ what not. I ate more than a few table spoons of soild coconut oil one day (I actually liked the flavor), and....the consequence was no fun, to say the least. Gotta start slowly. They say you only need up to 3 table spoons a day, if that.

Midface = philtrum?

I think short philtrum generally looks better, though, Beyonce has longish philtrum and still looks amazing.
