Avoiding jaw problems in children

Does anyone have any advice for monitoring children’s jaw development to avoid problems later? I have two daughters, the eldest of which is three. I check her teeth but I am not an expert on bite or how the jaw develops so I want to know what type of things to look out for and the kind of specialist she could see.

You look for an orthodontist who is NOT the type to want to pluck pre-molars and push the face BACKWARDS in order to get the 'bite right'; an ortho with in interest in facial development.
