Bimax & Cheek implants?
« on: October 16, 2018, 08:34:55 AM »
Can or do surgeons perform bimax on an individual with cheek implants?

i.e.
⚫ Would the cheek implants have to be taken out prior to surgery or can they be left in?
⚫ If they have to be taken out, do you think they would/could be applied immediately after movement of the maxilla (would it interfere with the healing process: cuts being made, blood supply, soft tissue etc... ?)

I'm asking out of concern with the movement of the maxilla.

Updating for others as I've received the answer from a surgeon (if you'd like to know who, you can PM me)

"in case of bimax the implants should also not be touched,
problems with implants with this kind of surgery are higher.
so the advantages and disadvantages and benefits have to be carefully discussed with you and
your orthodontist.

Alternative to the implants would be zygoma osteotomy."

Was off the board for a while when this question came in.

Anyway, cheek implants are usually above the field where the Lefort 1 cut is made. So, they don't get in the way of having the Lefort 1 cut for a maxfax surgery.

Very doubtful a doc would remove the implants and then put the SAME ones back in during the Lefort 1 surgery. They can leave them in during the surgery but not take them out and put the same ones back in again. Sterility issues.
Please. No PMs for private advice. Board issues only.
