Insurance
« on: March 09, 2019, 02:36:39 PM »
Hi
I see some people have better luck getting jaw surgery covered by their insurance company than others. All the policies I've seen exclude TMJ issues and sleep issues so surgery for bite problems and sleep apnea don't appear to be covered.
In my case I didn't have dental cover so my surgery wouldn't be covered, is this the deciding factor? Does cover for necessary jaw surgery generally fall under a 'dental' policy, or does it depend on the exact reasons for needing it?

Jaw Surgery falls under medical.

Don't get caught up reading your insurances policy information, you will get lost and frustrated. Best thing to
do is have the doctor you'd like to see insurance specialist look into it for you. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply.

Really.. That surprises me that jaw surgery would always fall under medical, even if it is to correct bite issues?

I'm pretty sure I will be securing a loan and paying from it myself but it got me thinking, how does it work if a patient combines the surgery with non essential cosmetic procedure such as rhinoplasty; can a patient pay for the cosmetic procedure themselves if it is done in the same procedure?

I'm from the UK so I'm not at all familiar with private health insurance and it would appear my employers policy is pretty basic.

It's an omfs that performs it, not some regular dentist. So it's medical. I wouldn't combine surgery's, that's my opinion. I would seek out each one individually, with the best doctor possible.

Have the doctors office who you want to see check your insurance.
